Rotary drilling rigs range from compact foundation machines to enormous mining blasthole drills. Comparing manufacturers without first separating these applications can easily lead buyers toward the wrong equipment.

The leading rotary drilling rig manufacturers and suppliers I would evaluate include Epiroc, Sandvik, Caterpillar, Bauer, Liebherr, Soilmec, SANY, XCMG, Zoomlion, Sunward, Comacchio, Casagrande, MAIT, Fraste, and Drillmec. Their strengths differ across mining, foundations, water wells, geotechnical work, and oil-and-gas drilling.

I do not consider this an absolute worldwide sales ranking. I built the shortlist around current product availability, portfolio depth, international visibility, technical capability, and relevance to professional drilling buyers.

Who Are the Top 15 Rotary Drilling Rig Manufacturers in the World?

The term “rotary drilling rig” covers several equipment classes. Some manufacturers specialize in large mining blast holes, while others focus on bored piles, water wells, geotechnical work, or deep oil-and-gas wells.

My 15-company shortlist includes three major mining rotary-drill manufacturers, seven important deep-foundation and piling brands, and five specialist manufacturers serving foundations, water wells, geotechnical work, exploration, and oil-and-gas drilling. I compare each manufacturer within its actual application rather than assuming every rotary rig competes directly.

The first important distinction is application.

Epiroc's current rotary blasthole range includes machines from the DM family through the large Pit Viper series. Its Pit Viper 351, for example, drills approximately 270–406 mm holes and can apply up to about 56.7 tonnes of weight on bit.

Sandvik currently offers a similarly broad mining range. Its DR-series covers approximately 152–406 mm holes, with both diesel and electric versions now available across its intelligent rotary lineup.

A Bauer or Liebherr rig operates in a completely different market. Their rotary heads may generate hundreds of kNm of torque, but their objective is typically constructing large foundation piles rather than drilling blast holes.

That is why I never compare these manufacturers from one specification such as maximum torque alone.

Which Manufacturers Are Strongest in Mining Rotary Blasthole Drilling?

Large open-pit mines require specialized machines capable of high weight on bit, large hole diameters, substantial compressor airflow, automation, and long operating hours.

For large mining rotary blasthole drilling, Epiroc, Sandvik, and Caterpillar are three of the most established manufacturers I would evaluate. Their current product ranges cover medium-to-very-large blast holes and increasingly include automation, data systems, electric configurations, rotary/DTH flexibility, and equipment designed for continuous mine production.

1. Epiroc

Epiroc is one of the most recognizable names in surface blasthole drilling.

Its current portfolio includes the DM45/DM50, DM75, Pit Viper 231, Pit Viper 276, Pit Viper 291, and Pit Viper 351, among other machines.

The Pit Viper range is especially relevant to large mines.

The Pit Viper 231 covers roughly 152–251 mm holes, while the Pit Viper 351 reaches approximately 270–406 mm.

Epiroc also offers electric equipment such as the Pit Viper 235 E, a rotary/DTH blasthole rig for approximately 171–270 mm holes.

I would consider Epiroc when priorities include:

large mining production + automation + rotary/DTH options + global mine support

2. Sandvik

Sandvik is another major supplier of intelligent rotary blasthole equipment.

Its current product family includes machines such as:

D245X → D50KX → DR410i → DR411i → DR412i → DR413i → DR416i

The DR416i reaches approximately 270–406 mm hole diameter, while the smaller DR410i covers roughly 152–251 mm.

Sandvik has also electrified its full next-generation intelligent range, from the DR410iE through the DR416iE.

For a mine considering diesel-to-electric transition, automation, and fleet integration, that product strategy can be important.

3. Caterpillar

Caterpillar's current mining rotary-drill range includes:

MD6200, MD6250, MD6310, MD6380, and MD6640.

I associate Cat rotary drills particularly with mines that already operate large Caterpillar fleets.

That can simplify:

  • Dealer relationships
  • Parts procurement
  • Technician access
  • Fleet-management integration
  • Equipment financing
  • Standardization

However, I still compare the actual drilling specification.

A strong dealer network does not compensate for the wrong hole diameter, pull-down, compressor, or rotary-head capability.

Which Manufacturers Are Strongest in Foundation Rotary Drilling Rigs?

Foundation rotary rigs require different engineering from mining drills. They typically need very high rotary torque, Kelly bars, strong main winches, large pile diameters, precise mast control, and multiple piling configurations.

Major foundation rotary-drilling manufacturers include Bauer, Liebherr, Soilmec, SANY, XCMG, Zoomlion, and Sunward. These companies offer hydraulic crawler rigs for Kelly drilling and, depending on model, CFA, displacement piling, casing, double-rotary, soil-mixing, or other foundation methods. The correct manufacturer depends strongly on pile diameter, depth, geology, transport limits, and local service.

4. Bauer

Bauer is one of the specialist names I associate most closely with deep-foundation drilling.

Its current BG drilling rigs cover multiple foundation techniques, while the company describes its machines as multifunction platforms supported by drilling tools, accessories, and assistance systems.

The current BG 45 BS 95 provides approximately:

461 kNm maximum torque
100 m Kelly drilling depth
3,700 mm uncased Kelly drilling diameter

In September 2026, Bauer also highlighted its new BG 50, with 470 kW output and increased performance compared with the BG 45. Bauer states that the BG 55 remains its largest current rotary rig.

For demanding specialist foundations, Bauer would be high on my evaluation list.

5. Liebherr

Liebherr's LB series serves deep-foundation contractors requiring powerful multifunction rotary rigs.

Its current range includes the LB 25, LB 30, LB 35.1, LB 45.1, and the newer LB 55.

The LB 55 currently offers approximately:

557 kNm maximum torque
120.4 m maximum Kelly depth
4,800 mm maximum Kelly drilling diameter

Liebherr also supports techniques including Kelly drilling, CFA, full-displacement, double-rotary, and DTH configurations depending on the rig setup.

6. Soilmec

Italian manufacturer Soilmec has a strong specialist-foundation portfolio.

Its current SR Blue Tech series includes machines such as:

SR-65, SR-75, SR-95, SR-105 and SR-125.

The SR-125 currently provides up to approximately 496 kNm of torque and weighs around 125 tonnes in its listed configuration.

I especially consider Soilmec where contractors need a machine capable of changing between multiple foundation technologies rather than performing only conventional Kelly drilling.

7. SANY

SANY has developed one of the broadest Chinese rotary piling portfolios.

Its current global range includes compact through very large SR machines, with models spanning pile diameters from roughly 1,100 mm up to more than 3,000 mm, depending on series and configuration.

The SR285R-W10, for example, supports approximately:

2,200/1,900 mm maximum pile diameter
94/61 m maximum depth
105-tonne operating weight

I would evaluate SANY when looking for high-capacity Chinese equipment with a broad international product program.

8. XCMG

XCMG is another major Chinese construction-equipment manufacturer with a substantial foundation-machinery business.

Current project reporting from XCMG shows XR-series machines such as the XR220DII, XR320D, and XR360E operating on foundation work, while the XR360E provides approximately 360 kN·m rotary torque.

XCMG also manufactures larger and more specialized XR models.

For international buyers, I check the exact export specification because engine, emissions, controls, and after-sales configuration can vary by market.

9. Zoomlion

Zoomlion's ZR series is another important Chinese rotary-drilling line.

Its current ZR300U is published with approximately:

2,000 mm maximum drilling diameter
58/88 m maximum drilling depth
290 kN·m rated rotary torque

Zoomlion reported expanded European deliveries of its U-series rotary rigs in 2026, including the ZR255U, ZR300U, and ZR420U.

That makes the brand increasingly relevant to international foundation contractors rather than only domestic Chinese projects.

10. Sunward

Sunward produces a wide SWDM rotary drilling range.

Current machines range from compact rigs such as the SWDM60S through larger equipment including the SWDM240 and SWDM325.

The current SWDM325 is specified with approximately:

2,500 mm maximum drilling diameter
63.5 m-class listed depth in the U.S. specification
roughly 465 kN·m-equivalent maximum torque

and supports multiple foundation configurations through its quick-change architecture.

I consider Sunward particularly interesting when a buyer wants a broader price and size choice within Chinese foundation equipment.

Which Specialist Rotary Drilling Rig Suppliers Should Buyers Consider?

Not every project requires a huge mining or piling machine. Water wells, geothermal drilling, micropiles, ground engineering, and oil-and-gas wells require specialized rigs with very different feed systems and tooling.

Specialist manufacturers worth comparing include Comacchio, Casagrande, MAIT, Fraste, and Drillmec. Comacchio and Casagrande cover foundation and geotechnical work; MAIT specializes strongly in foundation drilling; Fraste has extensive water-well and multipurpose rotary capability; and Drillmec supplies much larger complete land-rig systems for oil and gas.

11. Comacchio

Comacchio manufactures rigs for:

large-diameter piles + micropiles + anchors + geotechnical investigation + geothermal + water wells + exploration

This broad specialization makes it useful when a contractor works outside conventional large bored-pile construction.

Its MC machines can perform rotary and rotary-percussion methods, including specialized long-reach configurations for difficult slopes and access conditions.

12. Casagrande

Casagrande is another established Italian foundation and geotechnical drilling manufacturer.

The current B360 XP-2, for example, supports rotary drilling, CFA, displacement piles, and soil mixing, with approximately:

400 kNm rotary torque
99 m listed maximum drilling depth
2,700 mm standard maximum drilling diameter

Smaller current machines such as the B200 and CB20 allow contractors to choose across several size classes rather than buying a single heavy platform.

13. MAIT

MAIT manufactures dedicated foundation-drilling machinery.

Its HR 180 is one of its well-established multipurpose models and offers approximately:

233 kNm maximum torque
1,600 mm maximum diameter
60 m maximum depth

in its standard piling configuration.

It can also be configured for CFA, cased piles, diaphragm work, and double-head drilling.

I consider MAIT particularly relevant for contractors wanting a specialist foundation manufacturer rather than a broad general construction-equipment company.

14. Fraste

Fraste is especially relevant to water-well, geothermal, geotechnical, and multipurpose rotary drilling.

The company currently offers crawler, truck-mounted, and other rig configurations and has manufactured drilling equipment since 1964.

Its FS 400, for example, supports:

direct fluid circulation
reverse circulation
DTH air drilling
dry auger drilling

and provides up to approximately 32.7 kNm rotary-head torque with a listed drilling capacity around 600 m.

That is very different from a foundation piling machine, but exactly why Fraste belongs in a broad rotary-drilling supplier comparison.

15. Drillmec

Drillmec operates at the other end of the scale.

It specializes in complete oil-and-gas drilling packages rather than conventional construction crawler rigs.

Its current onshore portfolio includes:

conventional land rigs + mobile rigs + hydraulic rigs + automated systems

with published hook-load classes ranging from approximately 60 to 907 metric tonnes.

Drillmec's land-rig packages can include top drives, drawworks, pipe handling, rotary tables, mud systems, drilling controls, power systems, and other complete rig equipment.

I include Drillmec to show how broad the term “rotary drilling rig” really is.

My insights: Top 15 Rotary Drilling Rig Manufacturers & Suppliers in the World

A list of 15 brands is useful for building a supplier shortlist, but I would never purchase a rotary drilling rig from ranking position alone.

My 15 rotary drilling rig manufacturers and suppliers to evaluate are Epiroc, Sandvik, Caterpillar, Bauer, Liebherr, Soilmec, SANY, XCMG, Zoomlion, Sunward, Comacchio, Casagrande, MAIT, Fraste, and Drillmec. The right supplier depends first on whether I need mining blastholes, foundation piles, water wells, geotechnical holes, or oil-and-gas drilling.

My first insight is to define “rotary drilling rig” before comparing suppliers

This is the biggest issue with lists like this.

Consider four machines:

Epiroc Pit Viper 351
Mining blast holes around 270–406 mm.

Liebherr LB 55
Foundation piles reaching approximately 4,800 mm diameter.

Fraste FS 400
Multipurpose water-well drilling reaching hundreds of meters.

Drillmec land rig
Oil-and-gas wells with hook loads measured in hundreds of tonnes.

All are rotary drilling equipment.

They are not interchangeable.

So before requesting quotations, I classify my project as:

mining → foundation → water well/geothermal → geotechnical → oil and gas

That immediately reduces the relevant supplier list.

My second insight is that the strongest supplier changes by application

For a large open-pit mine, my shortlist may begin with:

Epiroc + Sandvik + Caterpillar

For demanding foundation piling:

Bauer + Liebherr + Soilmec

For buyers comparing Chinese foundation equipment:

SANY + XCMG + Zoomlion + Sunward

For specialist geotechnical or foundation work:

Comacchio + Casagrande + MAIT

For multipurpose water wells:

Fraste and other dedicated water-well specialists

For large oil-and-gas land rigs:

Drillmec and other petroleum-drilling OEMs

This application-based approach is much more useful than pretending one manufacturer is “number one” in every drilling sector.

My third insight is to compare the complete technical package

Once I identify suitable manufacturers, I send every supplier the same specification.

For a foundation rig, that might include:

RequirementExample
ApplicationBridge foundation
Maximum pile diameter2,000 mm
Maximum pile depth70 m
FormationClay, gravel and weathered rock
Drilling methodKelly
Required torqueBased on geology/tooling
Kelly barIncluded
Casing oscillatorOptional
Emission standardStage V
Transport widthProject-specific
Spare partsTwo-year package

For a mining rotary rig, the request would be completely different:

hole diameter → bench depth → geology → bit type → weight on bit → rotary torque → compressor flow → single-pass depth → automation

I want suppliers to solve the same engineering problem.

Otherwise, their prices are not comparable.

My fourth insight is to verify international support

The manufacturer's country matters less to me than the support actually available where the rig will operate.

I ask:

Is there a local dealer?

Are technicians trained on this exact model?

Which parts are stocked locally?

How quickly can I obtain a rotary-head seal kit?

What about pumps, sensors, controllers, ropes, bearings, and electrical modules?

Can the supplier troubleshoot remotely?

Liebherr, for example, explicitly promotes its worldwide sales and service network as part of its current deep-foundation offering.

But I perform the same verification for every manufacturer.

A global brand with weak support in my specific country can be less practical than a smaller supplier with an excellent local distributor.

My fifth insight is that I would not buy from the “Top 15” ranking alone

When someone asks me, “Who are the Top 15 Rotary Drilling Rig Manufacturers & Suppliers in the World?”, this is my practical shortlist:

1. Epiroc — mining rotary blasthole rigs
2. Sandvik — intelligent mining rotary rigs
3. Caterpillar — large mining rotary drills
4. Bauer — specialist foundation rotary rigs
5. Liebherr — high-capacity deep-foundation rigs
6. Soilmec — multipurpose foundation drilling
7. SANY — broad Chinese rotary piling range
8. XCMG — foundation and infrastructure drilling
9. Zoomlion — large rotary piling machines
10. Sunward — compact-to-heavy rotary foundation rigs
11. Comacchio — geotechnical, foundation and water-well equipment
12. Casagrande — specialist foundation and geotechnical rigs
13. MAIT — foundation rotary drilling rigs
14. Fraste — water-well and multipurpose drilling rigs
15. Drillmec — onshore oil-and-gas drilling systems

I use this list to create candidates.

Then I select the supplier through:

application → geology → diameter → depth → drilling method → torque/feed capacity → tooling → productivity → fuel/energy use → transport → parts → service → lifecycle cost

The manufacturer that survives that process is much more likely to be the right supplier for my project.

A famous brand with the wrong machine can still produce a poor drilling result.

A correctly matched machine with reliable support can deliver lower cost per drilled meter for years.

Conclusion

Leading rotary drilling rig manufacturers include Epiroc, Sandvik, Caterpillar, Bauer, Liebherr, Soilmec, SANY, XCMG, Zoomlion, Sunward, and specialist suppliers serving foundation, water-well, and oilfield drilling.
